Social Marketing Everyone has jumped on to the Social Media marketing bandwagon. Companies seem to think that it is the new way to circumvent the traditional marketing spheres, and a lot of ‘Social Media Guru’s’ have played into that belief. Now companies from funeral homes to pest exterminators have Facebook pages and Twitter feeds. But a company should really stop and ask if this is really going to benefit their business? Are they creating these social media avenues for the right reasons? And what kind of communication are they opening themselves up for?
There are globally a number of companies that have gotten social marketing correct. Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream have an incredible presence on Twitter, with their feed being @CherryGarcia which has an incredible following and it is a carefully thought out and monitored account. As a result the popularity of the feed grows daily. The principle reason for this social marketing success is that it is carefully monitored and the person behind it takes the time to actively interact with every user who mentions any of their products. It’s a hugely powerful tool.
So how will you make a success out of your social marketing strategy. The first priority is to get someone behind the brand who is able to communicate sensibly and accurately about your brand, but also someone who is able to not communicate about your brand. And if this seems counter-productive I’ll explain the importance of why this is. If you simply shout messages out about how wonderful your service, company or product is, you are going to be ignored. If however you take the time to find interesting articles to share, or other gregarious users to interact with you become a contributor to a social environment.
Marketing is no longer a shouting match between brands. Social marketing is about being as much a participant in the environment as it is about telling people who you are. Social marketing users are smart and should never be underestimated. The more you are able to, as a custodian of an online brand, communicate with your social market, the more successful you will be in Social Marketing.
